Paul Gruhler is a geometric abstraction artist that has been on a 60- year artistic journey. He came to me about designing a book that documents this journey from the New York City art scene in the early 1960s to his current life in Vermont.
The art that Paul creates is noted for intense and sometimes subtle color on very large canvases. Reproducing this art was going to be a challenge and so we turned to Villanti Printers to print the oversized 128-page casebound book. The result was stupendous.
Getting to know Paul and his history was yet another journey. We worked with Carolyn Bauer, Associate Curator at Shelburne Museum, to interview Paul and to capture his story. She did a wonderful job of both putting Paul’s work into historical context as well as capturing the excitement of the art word in Manhattan during those times.
This project has been a rewarding design project as well as a gift to work with such a talented artist and design team.
